Essential pieces for a basic closet

A basic closet should include versatile and timeless pieces that can be easily combined to create different looks. Here are some essential pieces you should have in your closet.

Remember that these are suggestions. If you don’t identify with one of these pieces, replace it with one that has more to do with you but follows the same line and performs the same function.

1 – White T-shirt:
A good quality white T-shirt can be worn on its own or layered with other garments. Prefer 100% cotton shirts as they don’t accumulate odors or create bubbles.
2 – Jeans:
Well-fitting jeans are essential. Opting for a darker wash can make them more versatile. The most timeless styles are straight and flair. Prefer those without elastane, they are classic and super elegant.
3 -Button-down shirt:
A white or neutral-colored button-down shirt can be worn for both formal and informal occasions. Loose-fitting styles are on the rise and work with practically everything. Fabrics such as tricoline without elastane tend to enhance the piece even more.

4 -Blazer:
A well-cut blazer takes any look, whether with jeans or tailored pants, to another level. Give preference to well-structured pieces with shoulder pads and a good shape.

5 – Little Black Dress:
A basic black dress is ideal for a variety of occasions, from formal events to casual outings. They are great to wear with a third piece, such as a blazer, jacket or cardigan.

6 – Tailored pants:
Tailored pants in a neutral color, such as black, grey or beige, are excellent for work looks or formal occasions. But they can also be used to put together informal looks, with a cotton T-shirt for example. Tailored pants really are an asset to any closet.

7 – Sweater or cardigan:
A neutral sweater or cardigan can be worn in layers and is great for colder days. For those who live in warmer regions, you can opt for a cardigan in a lighter, cooler fabric.
Pencil Skirt or Midi Skirt:
A pencil skirt or midi skirt in a neutral color is versatile and can be combined with various blouses, shirts and even t-shirts.
8 – Leather or Jeans Jacket:
The leather or denim jacket adds a touch of style and can be worn in several seasons. Remember that leather jackets need care to last longer. Clean with neutral soap and a damp cloth and moisturize with body cream.

9 – Neutral shoes:
A pair of black or nude shoes, such as ballet flats, sneakers, sandals and heels, are essential to match any look. Wear black shoes with dark and more formal looks.

10 – Structured bag:
A structured bag in a neutral color is practical and goes with almost everything. Look for quality, it doesn’t have to be a famous brand. The most common bag size is medium.

11 – Basic accessories:
A few basic accessories, such as a classic watch, pearl or small hoop earrings, and a neutral belt, complete your closet.

These pieces form the basis of a functional and versatile closet, allowing you to create different looks for different occasions.

Try to have timeless and functional pieces in your closet and when shopping, ask yourself if what you want to buy matches what you already have.

If you still don’t know what your personal style is, define it. Having a personal style will save you time and money when shopping.
